About Hornellsville, New York
Hornellsville is a town of 4,039 people in Steuben County, not counting the city of Hornell, and its western line is the border with Allegany County. Settlers first came around 1790, near the spot that grew into the city of Hornell, and the town carries the name of a prominent pioneer family. The Canisteo River runs south through it.
In 1820 the state carved the Town of Hornellsville out of the Town of Canisteo. The new town then gave up ground of its own as more settlers arrived and new towns were drawn around them.
- Hartsville and FremontLand that once belonged to Hornellsville became the Town of Hartsville in 1844. Ten years later, in 1854, more of its territory went toward forming the Town of Fremont.
- A city renamed in 1906The settlement of Hornellsville was incorporated as a village in 1852 and became a city in 1888. In 1906 the city changed its name to Hornell. The town still wraps around Hornell on every side, though the city is not part of it, so people now use the name Hornellsville mostly in real estate and legal papers.
