About Howland Center, Ohio

Howland Center is a community of 6,351 people in Trumbull County, Ohio, made up of the unincorporated, built-up parts of Howland Township near Warren and Youngstown. The first settler came to the township in 1799, and it was formally organized as Howland Township in 1812.

Its early settlers soon had places to process their timber and grain. A sawmill opened in 1814, and a gristmill followed the next year. Few people lived in the township until 1953, when builders put up the Clifton-Hyde housing development. Warren and Youngstown spread outward after that, and Howland has kept growing as one of their suburbs.

  • Named for a Mayflower familyJohn Howland crossed on the Mayflower and landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620. One of his descendants, Joseph Howland, bought this township from the Connecticut Land Company in 1795, four years before the first settler came, and it still carries the family name.
  • The spa at Howland SpringsDr. John Seely bought 85 acres in 1803, land that held mineral springs. The springs grew into a health spa and became the township's favorite place for culture and recreation. Their water kept selling across northeastern Ohio, and the historical marker there names it the oldest continuous business in the township.
  • The Shedd brothers' hotelThe Shedd brothers put up a hotel three stories tall in 1873, just south of the springs, and guests there could dance, shoot billiards or go bowling. Fire destroyed the hotel on June 16, 1882, and fewer people came to the springs to relax after that.
  • Five schools made one in 1917In 1917 five one-room schools combined into a single district, the Howland Local School District. Today it runs Howland Springs Elementary, Howland Glen Elementary, Mines Elementary, Howland Middle School and Howland High School.
