About Hyde Park, New York
Hyde Park is a town of 21,021 people in Dutchess County, with the Hudson River as its western line and Poughkeepsie to the south. European settlement officially began around 1742, though some families may have arrived as early as 1710. The area was first called Stoutenburgh, after its first settler, Jacobus Stoughtenburg, and part of its land came from the Great Nine Partners Patent of 1697.
The new name began with Doctor John Bard, who gave his estate the name Hyde Park to honor Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury, who governed New York from 1702 to 1708. In 1804 a tavern keeper named Miller, hoping to draw more guests, renamed his tavern the Hyde Park Inn, which annoyed Bard. Miller then won a post office for his inn under the same name, and in 1812 the settlement officially became Hyde Park. It stayed part of Clinton until 1821, when it became a separate town.
- FDR's hometownFranklin D. Roosevelt, who lived from 1882 to 1945, called Hyde Park home all his life and kept his family estate, Springwood, while he was president from 1933 until his death. His father, James Roosevelt Sr., had served a term as town supervisor. Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt are buried in the Springwood rose garden, and the National Park Service now cares for the estate as a national historic site bearing his name.
- The first presidential libraryThe Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum stands on the Springwood grounds. It was the first presidential library in the United States.
- Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-KillEleanor Roosevelt made her own home at Val-Kill, about 2 miles east of her husband's house at Springwood.
- Vanderbilt on the HudsonRailroad magnate Frederick William Vanderbilt built a mansion in Hyde Park for the spring and autumn seasons. It is now the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, and parts of the 1994 film Wolf, with Jack Nicholson, were shot there.
- The Culinary Institute of AmericaHyde Park holds the Culinary Institute of America's main campus, a four-year college for cooking and for baking and pastry arts. The school appears in James Mangold's 1995 film Heavy, which was partly set in the town.
