Iberville Parish, LA 1857 Greek Revival Mansion Ruins
This vintage photograph captures the remains of a Greek Revival mansion located in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, near White Castle. Built in 1857 by John Andrews, the structure features distinctive architectural elements such as grand columns, pediments, and elaborate porticoes. Once a 75-room residence, it exemplified the grandeur of antebellum architecture in the South.
The mansion was sold to Mason Smith & Co. and later occupied by the Ware family until around 1913. Over the years, the building fell into a ruinous condition, reflecting the passage of time and changing fortunes. This image serves as a historical marker of the regions architectural heritage and the lifestyle of its former inhabitants.
The photograph is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, which aims to document significant structures across the Southern United States. It was acquired from the estate of Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1953, further preserving its historical significance for future generations.
