About Independence, Kansas

Independence is a city of 8,548 people and the county seat of Montgomery County, on the west bank of the Verdigris River just below where the Elk River flows in. In August 1869 a small party led by R. W. Wright left Oswego, Kansas, hoping to start a city somewhere farther west. They stopped first at Montgomery City in Drum Creek Township. They couldn't reach terms with the town company already there, so they set out to build a rival town and named it for the spirit behind it: Independence.

Frank Bunker and W. O. Sylvester already held claims on part of the chosen ground, but they agreed to move so the town company could have the entire section. Capt. Hamer and G. A. Brown surveyed it into lots, and Bunker's log claim house became the first building on the site. Within a week the Independence Pioneer, printed at Oswego under E. R. Trask, was spreading word of the new town. In May 1870 the county commissioners made Independence the county seat, and that November a vote of the people made it official.

  • A feast in the riverOn September 11, 1869, the founders threw a celebration to mark the new town. J. N. Debrule drove an ox team from Oswego, his wagon loaded with an ox roasted whole, a full barrel of bread and four kegs of beer. At the Verdigris crossing the oxen fought the wagon and spilled the food into the water. The men quickly fished most of it out, beer included, and went on to their party.
  • 200 houses in a yearA. Waldschmidt built the county's first grist mill here in 1870. The branch railroad people called "Bunker's Plug" reached town by January 1, 1872, and after committee after committee went to Washington, the Government Land Office opened here that March. From the spring of 1871 to the spring of 1872, over 200 houses went up and the population climbed from 1,000 to about 2,300.
  • Baseball under the lightsOn April 17, 1930, Independence became the first city to light an exhibition baseball game with a permanent lighting system. The Independence Producers beat the House of David, a semi-pro team from Benton Harbor, Michigan, 9 to 1 in front of 1,700 fans. The game was played at Shulthis Stadium in Riverside Park, the same field where Mickey Mantle started his professional career.
  • A space monkey from the zooMiss Able, a rhesus monkey, was born at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Riverside Park. Together with Miss Baker, a small squirrel monkey, she made the first trip into space for any American monkey, and both came back alive on May 28, 1959. A sign at the zoo honors her today.
  • William Inge's hometownWilliam Inge, who won a Pulitzer Prize as a playwright and an Academy Award as a screenwriter, grew up in Independence and studied at Independence Community College. His boyhood home joined the National Register in 2018, and the William Inge Center for the Arts at the college keeps his archives.
