About Ingalls Park, Illinois

Ingalls Park is an unincorporated community of 3,460 people in Will County, a suburb on the edge of Joliet. Its small neighborhood and handful of businesses sit between Pilcher Park and Interstate 80, on ground that was once known as Ingalls' Park.

That name belonged to the farm of Lewis Ellsworth Ingalls, who started as a hired hand paid ten dollars a month and his board. He worked his way up until he was Joliet's leading real estate dealer for many years. His farm near the city grew to 340 acres, and on it he kept a sod race track a mile long, said to be among the fastest in America. Many fairs and races were held there.

  • Sixty acres of house lotsBy 1918 Ingalls had cut sixty acres of his farm into building lots. Before selling them, he supplied the new streets with water, a sewer system, cement walks, shade trees and drives.
  • A box factory from 1903Around 1903 the National Carton Company, which made boxes and paper products, put up a factory at 1 South Park Road. The L-shaped brick plant stood two stories high and measured 435 by 90 feet. Railroad sidings ran along its north and south walls and out to a paper warehouse. National Carton kept the plant running until 1960.
  • Closest town to the SpeedwayNo town sits nearer to Chicagoland Speedway than Ingalls Park. The track was a stop for the NASCAR Cup Series every year from 2001 through 2019.
