About Ivanhoe, California

Ivanhoe is a community of 4,468 people in Tulare County, California, about 5 miles north of Farmersville. The town covers 1.3 square miles, and the 2020 census found it slightly smaller than in 2010, when 4,495 people lived here.

Its name belonged to the local school district for decades before the town itself took it. The settlement went by another name until 1924, when local farmers succeeded in giving it the school's name.

  • Named for Walter Scott's novelIn 1885 Mrs. Ellen Boas proposed the title of Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe as the name of the local school district, and the district took it.
  • First known as KlinkBefore it was Ivanhoe, the settlement was called Klink. That name honored George T. Klink, an auditor for the Southern Pacific.
  • Renamed in 1924The Venice Hill Land Company wanted to call the place Venice Hill, but residents refused. The Ivanhoe Farm Bureau then pushed for the name the school district had used since 1885, and in 1924 the town became Ivanhoe.
