This vintage postcard captures the J. V. Motel, a roadside stop along Pulaski Highway , the old U.S. Route 40 , set midway between Aberdeen and Baltimore, Maryland. The motel sat near Bradshaw, a small community in Baltimore County. Before the interstate era, Route 40 was one of the main arteries carrying travelers along the East Coast, and motels like this one offered weary motorists a welcome place to rest.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave their bright inks a warm, painterly glow. This card was originally published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the vivid tones the original artists intended.
