About Jacksonville, Pennsylvania

After the Civil War, Jacksonville became home to a state school for soldiers' orphans. In the spring of 1866, Rev. D. G. Klein bought the Fairview Seminary property for it. The buildings were enlarged to hold 150 pupils. The state paid for each child under ten to be fed, clothed and taught.

A sulphur spring on William Lucas's land near Jacksonville was well known in the area. People drank its water freely and believed it had healing powers. It was even packed in barrels and shipped to Bellefonte and other towns.
