About James, Michigan

James is a township of 1,792 people in Saginaw County, bounded in part by the Tittabawassee River down to where it meets the Shiawassee. It began as part of Swan Creek Township, and in 1874 a group of 14 freeholders living in that corner asked the county board to make it a township of its own. The board agreed on Oct. 22, 1874, and set the land off under the name James.

The first township meeting took place on April 5, 1875, in the schoolhouse on section 6, which had been Swan Creek's school district number one. Voters chose Edwin S. Dunbar as supervisor, Jacob Zieroff as clerk and Joseph Zieroff as treasurer. Within a few years the new township counted 572 people on its 18 sections.

“The first white settler in James Township, according to early records, was Hugh McCullough who made the first clearing and put up the first log cabin south of the Tittabawassee.”

  • Killed by a falling treeFelix Heinrich was one of the two justices chosen at the first township meeting in 1875. On May 31, 1876, he was heading home from Saginaw City in a storm when a large tree came down and crushed him.
  • One school, 103 childrenMiss Adams taught the township's first school, and Miss Sarah Ludlow was teaching in 1861. Years later James still had just one school, taught by Miss Cora Lacy, with 103 children in its district and 18 more in a fractional district.
  • From County Mayo to section 31James Murphy, born in County Mayo, Ireland, in 1837, traded cattle across much of Ireland before he sailed on April 9, 1863. He made bricks near Ann Arbor for two years and in Saginaw County for 11 more, then bought 168 acres on section 31 in 1874 and settled down to farm.
