About Jamestown, North Dakota

Jamestown is a city of 15,849 people and the seat of Stutsman County, where Pipestem Creek flows into the James River. In the fall of 1871 a small crew of Northern Pacific engineers camped here through the winter, so they could start work on the new transcontinental line across the James in the spring. The town dates its founding to 1872, when General Thomas Rosser of the Northern Pacific gave it the name of Jamestown, Virginia.

That same year the Army built Fort Seward on a bluff above the meeting of the two streams to guard the railroad crossing. About 120 soldiers from three companies of the Twentieth Infantry served there until the post closed in 1877. The railroad stayed, and its repair yard remained one of the city's leading industries until the 1960s. Jamestown was incorporated as a city in 1883.

  • The territory's first countyStutsman County, organized in 1873, was the first official county in Dakota Territory, and the new railroad town of Jamestown became its seat.
  • A college that came backThe Presbyterian Church founded Jamestown College in 1883, and it took men and women from the start. Its first fall term opened on Tuesday, September 29, 1886, at 9 in the morning, but hard times across the county forced it to close in the spring of 1890. It reopened on September 22, 1909, after better farming methods brought new people to the state. It is now the University of Jamestown.
  • A bishop's seat in 1889The Catholic Church created the Diocese of Jamestown on November 10, 1889, with its bishop seated here. When the bishop's seat moved east, the diocese was renamed the Diocese of Fargo on April 6, 1897.
  • Louis L'Amour's hometownThe western writer Louis L'Amour was born in Jamestown, and Louis L'Amour Elementary School is named for him. The city is also home to the World's Largest Buffalo, a bison sculpture 26 feet tall, and the National Buffalo Museum.
