About Jarbidge, Nevada

Jarbidge is an unincorporated community in Elko County, set deep in the canyon of the Jarbidge River about 10 miles south of the Idaho border. Its name comes from a Shoshone word meaning "devil," because the native people believed the hills around it were haunted.

Gold was found near the canyon in 1909, and the strike set off one of the last gold rushes on the American frontier. The camp held nearly 2,000 people by 1911, then began a slow decline, and during World War I much of its mining equipment was stripped and taken for the war effort. Mining ended completely in 1932. In 2013 permits to take out the gold were issued again, and the mine is reopening.

“Within a few months a tent town of about 2000 persons had been built in the canyon, and the hillsides for several miles around were located.”
U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1931
  • The West's last stagecoach holdupDuring a storm on December 5, 1916, a stagecoach was robbed in Jarbidge Canyon, a quarter mile south of town, and a man was murdered. Nevada's State Historical Marker No. 69 records it as the West's final stagecoach robbery and murder.
  • A camp at 6,100 feetA 1931 Bureau of Mines report on the Elkoro Mines described Jarbidge squeezed into a narrow canyon 6,100 feet above sea level. The steep canyon walls sheltered the camp from the harshest weather, and they also let the miners work the ore by adits.
  • Nevada town on Idaho timeNo paved road comes within almost 20 miles of Jarbidge. Most visitors drive in from Rogerson, Idaho, on Three Creek Road, whose last 18 miles are unimproved, while the routes from Elko are often snowed shut from fall until early summer. Because the town is so tied to Idaho, it keeps Mountain Time even though the law puts it on Pacific Time.
