About Kahuku, Hawaii

Kahuku is a community of 2,852 people in Honolulu County, on the north shore of Oahu. Its name comes from the Hawaiian words ka huku, "the projection," probably for nearby Kahuku Point, the island's northernmost tip.

For most of a century the town was built around sugar. The Kahuku Sugar Mill opened in 1890 and processed cane until 1971. The plantation had been the main employer for many local workers, so its closing came especially hard for the young people who lost their jobs. The mill's tall smokestack stood for decades afterward, until it was brought down in 2004.

  • The smokestack comes downAlfred Maghany was born and raised in Kahuku and went to work at the sugar mill at 19. He spent 22 years there alongside his father and his older brother. To him the mill's 150-foot smokestack was the last landmark left from the town's plantation days. When crews toppled it in 2004, Maghany, then 75, joined more than 50 residents, passers-by and former mill hands who came out to watch it fall.
  • Three generations in the caneShintaro Furuto came to Kahuku from Hiroshima, Japan, and went to work on the sugar plantation. His son Jitsuo worked there too, and so did his grandson David Furuto, who later became a math professor at BYU-Hawaii. David remembered the plantation's closing as a sad moment for the town.
  • A football townMany Kahuku families trace their ancestry to Samoa or Tonga, and in those families the high school game carries real weight. Kahuku High School has turned out many football players. College recruiters watch its teams closely, and a good number of its players have gone on to the National Football League.
  • On televisionIn the 1970s the game show The Diamond Head Game was taped at Del Webb's Kuilima Hotel, just west of town, now the Turtle Bay Resort. Viewers who wanted tickets were told to write to the show at a Kahuku address. In 2004 the Fox series North Shore was filmed there as well.
