About Kailua, Honolulu County, Hawaii

Kailua is a community of 40,514 people in Honolulu County. It sits on Kailua Bay, on the windward coast of OΚ»ahu, 12 miles northeast of Honolulu over the NuΚ»uanu Pali. Its Hawaiian name means "two seas" or "two currents," joining kai, the sea, with Κ»elua, two. The name may point to the district's two old fishponds, Kawainui and KaΚ»elepulu, or to the two currents in the bay.

King Kākuhihewa and the chiefs who came after him, Kualiʻi among them, made Kailua the home of Oʻahu's ruling aliʻi nui in place of Waikiki. Ruins of old temples, such as Ulupo Heiau, are still in the area. Kailua held that role until 1795. That year Kamehameha the Great beat the Oʻahu army at the Battle of Nuʻuanu, and the rulers' seat moved to Honolulu.

  • Kaʻōhao before LanikaiThe oldest known Hawaiian name for Lanikai is Kaʻōhao, "the tying." It comes from an old story of two women who were tied together with a loincloth after losing a game of kōnane. Developers built the area up in the 1920s and gave it the name Lanikai. A trail along KaΚ»iwa Ridge there leads to World War II bunkers that people call the Lanikai Pillboxes.
  • Hawaii's largest wetlandKawainui Marsh is the largest wetland in the Hawaiian Islands. It is a Ramsar Convention site, and it makes up much of the water inside the community's boundary.
  • A winter White HouseBarack Obama vacationed in Kailua from 2008 to 2012. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 his family rented Plantation Estate in Paradise Point Estates. The developer Harold Kainalu Long Castle built that house and made it his own home. The attention drew so many visitors that some residents pushed back. In 2022 Mayor Rick Blangiardi signed Bill 41 on Kailua beach. Under that law, anyone renting out a place in a residential neighborhood for under 90 days needs a permit.
  • Windsurfing's first championRobby Naish, the first World Champion of windsurfing, grew up in Kailua. The steady trade winds on its crescent beach, about 2.5 miles long, have made it a top place for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
