About Kalamazoo Township, Michigan
Kalamazoo Township is a charter township of 22,777 people in Kalamazoo County. It began on July 30, 1830, when the Territorial Legislature created it under the name Arcadia Township. On that same day, a second act set up the government of Kalamazoo County. At first Arcadia covered the whole northern tier of the county, all eight of its future townships.
The large township shrank as new ones were carved out of it. Richland Township split away in June 1832 and took in the land of Richland, Ross, Charleston and Comstock. Cooper Township, which also held Alamo, followed on March 11, 1837, and Oshtemo Township became separate on March 22, 1839.
- Arcadia became Kalamazoo in 1836Arcadia Township changed its name to Kalamazoo Township on March 2, 1836. On the same day, the village of Bronson also became Kalamazoo, so the township and the village took the new name together.
- A township in piecesOver the years, the neighboring cities of Kalamazoo and Parchment annexed much of the township's former land. Those annexations left the township in two separate pieces of land. A third, smaller section touches the rest only at a narrow point across Riverview Drive.
- Eastwood and WestwoodEastwood and Westwood are communities within the township, and part of Comstock Northwest lies inside its borders as well. The Census Bureau counts all three as census-designated places, but none of them is a separate municipality. They remain part of Kalamazoo Township.
