About Kalispell, Montana

Kalispell is the county seat of Flathead County, a city of 24,558 people at the 2020 census, 7 miles north of Flathead Lake. A short-lived town called Ashley started here in 1884. Three years later Demersville grew up 4.5 miles to the southeast, where steamboats tied up on the Flathead River, and it soon became the biggest town in the area.

The Great Northern Railway needed a division point in the Flathead Valley, so Fort Benton banker Charles Edward Conrad used his own money to form the Kalispell Townsite Company with three men from the railroad's board. Lots went on sale by the spring of 1891. When the Great Northern finished its track here that year and passed Demersville by, the people of both older towns moved their buildings to Kalispell piece by piece.

“A huge celebration took place immediately and a silver stake was nailed into the center tie to mark its beginning.”

  • A Salish nameThe town took the name of the local tribe and spelled it with an extra "L." In Salish, Kalispell means "flat land above the lake."
  • First train on New Year's DayThe first railroad car rolled into Main Street on New Year's Day, 1892, and Kalispell was incorporated as a city that same year. The main line did not stay long. In 1904 the Great Northern moved it off the old route over Haskell Pass to a flatter path through Whitefish and Eureka, but Kalispell kept growing anyway.
  • Conrad's mansion of 1895Charles E. Conrad, who formed the company that laid out the town, built a large mansion in Kalispell in 1895. The Charles E. Conrad Mansion is now on the National Register.
  • Tracks pulled up in 2018In 2018 the city bought the long-abandoned line through town and tore out the downtown track, closing the book on Kalispell's railroad days. The railroad shifted to Glacier Rail Park, an industrial park built just north of the city, and 2.4 miles of the original route were abandoned.
  • Heaven's Gate, 1980Heaven's Gate, the 1980 western epic, was filmed in and around Kalispell.
