About Kaskaskia, Illinois

Kaskaskia is a small Randolph County village whose history reaches from French and Native settlement through Illinois statehood. It governed Illinois Territory and then the new state before the capital moved to Vandalia in 1819. Repeated flooding and a major Mississippi River channel change transformed the community's site and access.
