About Kearney, Nebraska

Kearney is a city of 33,790 people and the county seat of Buffalo County, in central Nebraska. In 1848 the U.S. Army built Fort Kearny a few miles southeast of today's city to protect emigrants heading west on the Mormon and Overland Trails. Gold seekers, Pony Express riders and Union Pacific crews stopped at the fort until 1871. The first lasting settlement nearby was Dobytown, 2 miles southeast of the present city.

The Union Pacific reached the area in 1866. In 1871 a junction with the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad was fixed, and that summer a townsite called Kearney Junction was laid out a mile north of the Platte River. The city was incorporated on December 3, 1873, and it became the county seat in 1874.

  • An extra eThe fort was spelled Kearny, after the frontier officer Stephen W. Kearny. Postmen kept misspelling the town's name with an extra e, and over time Kearney became the accepted spelling.
  • Boom and bustFor some twenty years after Kearney became the county seat, Eastern investors poured money into it. They paid for an irrigation canal, a streetcar line powered by electricity and an opera house five stories tall, and Kearney gained a name as one of the most enterprising small cities west of the Missouri. The early 1890s farm depression and money crisis ended the boom. The grandest plans never came true, but Kearney remained central Nebraska's hub for business, schools and transportation.
  • A teachers' school in 1905The University of Nebraska at Kearney began in 1905 under the name Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney. It became Nebraska State Teachers College in 1921, and from 1963 to 1991 it was Kearney State College. That year it became part of the University of Nebraska system. Its 235-acre campus includes the George W. Frank House, an 1890s mansion that joined the National Register in 1973.
  • The Archway over I-80The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument stretches over Interstate 80 at mile marker 274, with exhibits on the road west from Oregon Trail days to now. President Bill Clinton toured it on December 8, 2000, and Jack Nicholson filmed a scene there for About Schmidt.
