About Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

Kenai Peninsula Borough is home to 58,799 people. Its peninsula runs about 150 miles to the southwest from the Chugach Mountains, below Anchorage. Athabaskan and Alutiiq peoples lived here for thousands of years before the Russians came. The Dena'ina called the land Yaghanen, "the good land." The name Kenai comes from the Kenaitze, the people along the Kahtnu, or Kenai River.

Russian traders set up a fur trading post at Kenai in 1791. In the early 1900s, canneries and the new railroad brought fresh growth. Seward, Soldotna, Kenai, Sterling, Cooper Landing and Homer are now among the larger towns of Southcentral Alaska.

  • The end of the roadNorth America's paved highway system ends at Homer. Nearby Anchor Point is the farthest west a driver can go on the linked highways. Seward, on the Gulf of Alaska, is the southern end of the Alaska Railroad.
  • Alaska's PlaygroundPeople call the peninsula "Alaska's Playground." The Kenai River is famous for its king salmon. The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge covers nearly two million acres. Tourism is a major business, and so is guiding for hunters and anglers.
  • Icefields and fjordsGlaciers cap the Kenai Mountains along the Gulf of Alaska coast. Much of the range lies inside Kenai Fjords National Park. The Harding and Sargent icefields feed many glaciers, among them Exit, Tustumena and McCarty.
