About Kincheloe, Michigan

Kincheloe is a community of 2,587 people in Chippewa County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and it stands on the grounds of a former air base. The Army Air Force opened the field in 1941 as Kinross Auxiliary Field. When the Air Force became its own branch of the military in 1947, the field became Kinross Air Force Base, and in 1959 it took the name of Captain Iven C. Kincheloe. The town that grew up on the old base later took his name too.

The base covered 7,265 acres, and about 10,000 personnel lived in the area when it closed in 1977. The loss hit Kinross Township and the whole region hard. The community held on as prisons, light industry and an airport moved onto the old base, and the local tax base eventually doubled, with the new ventures paying $110 million in civilian wages.

  • Named for a test pilotIven C. Kincheloe, from Cassopolis, Michigan, was a jet ace in the Korean War and later flew the X-2, an experimental rocket-powered plane, as a test pilot. He died in July 1958 while trying to eject from an F-104, and the next year the Air Force named the base for him.
  • Runways put back to workChippewa County International Airport, the region's only commercial airport, still uses some of the runways the Air Force built. Kinross Correctional Facility, Chippewa Correctional Facility, Kinross Manufacturing and American Kinross, Inc. also sit on the former base property and the land beside it.
  • The base golf course since 1951The base built a nine-hole golf course in 1951. It grew to 18 holes in 1987 and was long known as The Kincheloe Memorial Golf Course. Today it is The Oaks at Kincheloe, a par 72 course of 7,000 yards.
