This vintage linen postcard shows King's Court, a roadside motel that once welcomed travelers along U.S. Route 1, about fifteen miles north of downtown Baltimore in Kingsville, Maryland. In the years before the interstate highways, U.S. Route 1 was one of the great north–south arteries of the East Coast, carrying motorists between Maine and Florida — and motor courts like this one sprang up to greet them with a place to rest for the night.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, the "linen" postcard was at the height of its golden age, its softly textured stock and bright, saturated inks capturing an optimistic, motoring America. This image comes from the era of the Tichnor Brothers Collection of Boston, and this edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL so its colors shine as they did when it was new.
