This vintage linen postcard shows King's Court, a roadside motel along U.S. Route #1 in Kingsville, Maryland, a small community in Baltimore County. In the era before the Interstate system, U.S. Route 1 was one of the great north–south arteries of the East Coast, carrying travelers from Maine all the way to Florida , and motor courts like this one welcomed weary drivers looking for a place to rest along the way.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American travel postcards entered their celebrated "linen" age, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave the cards their soft glow and vivid color. Many of the finest were produced by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the well-known Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
