About Kingwood, West Virginia

Kingwood is a city of 2,980 people and the county seat of Preston County, high above the valley of the Cheat River in the Allegheny Mountains. The ground it stands on was once forest, owned in part by John Miller and Hugh Morgan, and the Northwestern Turnpike between Winchester and Morgantown crossed it.

Settlers came a few at a time through the 1790s and 1800s. On January 23, 1811, the Virginia General Assembly made the town official, and its name came from a grove of tall, stately trees. When the new Preston County was created in 1818, Kingwood became its seat of government, and the town received its charter in 1853.

“Preston County was formed in the east upstairs bedroom of Price's Tavern in April, 1818, and named for James Patton Preston, governor of Virginia, 1816-1819. Tavern built prior to 1810, served as an inn until 1882.”
