About Kinnelon, New Jersey

Kinnelon is a borough of 9,966 people in Morris County, New Jersey. It was first known as Charlotteburg, named for Charlotte, wife of Britain's King George III. Iron forges and furnaces drew settlers in the late 17th century, and they made their living from mining and cutting timber. After the Morris Canal was built in the early 1820s, mining fell off sharply, and the land was gradually sold.

Francis S. Kinney, who founded the Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company, started his estate here in 1883 and gathered upwards of 5,000 acres. That made it one of the biggest private holdings Morris County ever had. He called it Kinney Lawn. On February 20, 1922, an act of the New Jersey Legislature carved a new borough from Pequannock Township. Its 400 full-time residents named it Kinnelon, an altered form of Kinney's name for his estate.

  • A chapel on an islandIn 1886 Francis Kinney built St. Hubert's Chapel on an island in Lake Kinnelon. For years it was a private chapel, and services for the community stopped after 1923. They began again by October 1951, once more than 100 families had moved into the new Smoke Rise development around the lake.
  • Named for the evening mistKinney named his big summer cottage Smoke Rise, after the Pequannock name for these mountains, where heavy mist often lifts at sunset. His son Morris lived most of his life on the estate and, on his death in 1945, left it to his friend John Talbot Sr., a former borough mayor.
  • Smoke Rise Club, 1946Friends asked Talbot to sell them building lots. He chose instead to plan a club community for New York executives, modeled on Tuxedo Park, and he kept the woods as wild as he could. The Smoke Rise Club opened in November 1946. More than 900 homes now stand on its 3,500 acres, which take in Kitty Ann Mountain, the borough's highest point at 1,140 feet.
  • Fayson Lakes, founded 1925Frank Fay Jr., a developer, worked with Frank Fay III, his son, to buy 240 acres of farmland around a small pond, later named West Lake, and sell it as a summer lake colony. Their ads in The New York Times stressed the quick trip from New York City. East Lake came with a neighboring property in 1931, and land bought by 1938 was dammed in the 1950s to make South Lake. Until World War II, most were summer homes.
  • A speakeasy in the parkSilas Condict County Park covers 1,000 acres and was dedicated in 1964. Inside it stands the Casino, an old house that served as a speakeasy during Prohibition. The house is now rented out for parties and other events.
