About Kirwin, Kansas
From the Kansas Cyclopedia of State History: "The first settlements at Kirwin were made in 1869. The town was named after a Col. Kirwin, who was sent to this vicinity just after the war to erect a stockade for the protection of emigrants to California."
From the Kansas Cyclopedia of State History: "The postoffice was established in 1871, with H. P. Gandy as postmaster. Stores and other business establishments were opened about the same time."
