About Kopperl, Texas

Kopperl is a community of 164 people in Bosque County, at the northwestern end of Lake Whitney. Captain Gilbert Greer, one of the area's first settlers, came to Texas in 1837 and settled in the Brazos Valley near the future town in 1856.

The town itself was founded in 1881 as a shipping point on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, and it took its name from Moritz Kopperl, a Galveston banker and railroad man. Kopperl grew to 329 people by 1904, and a report from September 1908 counted 500 people in 115 families. The population later fell, and by the 1970s it stood at 225.

  • The academy of 1882On July 1, 1882, the railroad company sold lot 4 of block 5, for one dollar and other considerations, to five trustees of the Kopperl Academy, among them M.S. Greer and G.D. Greer. The academy was the first public building in town. Besides holding classes, it served as the meeting place for a union Sunday school.
  • Satan's Storm, 1960Just after midnight on June 15, 1960, a dying thunderstorm collapsed over Kopperl in a rare heat burst. The storm had already rained itself out, so it sent dry, superheated air down on the town in gusts of up to 75 mph, and the temperature reportedly climbed to near 140 °F. Locals named it Satan's Storm, and it became part of town folklore.
  • Kopperl in a songSteve Fromholz, a Texas native, set his song Texas Trilogy in Kopperl, and Lyle Lovett later recorded his own version of it.
