About Kosciusko, Mississippi

Kosciusko is a city of 7,114 people and the county seat of Attala County, near the Yockanookany River. Shortly before the War of 1812, a French trader named David Choate and his Choctaw wife opened an inn called the Choate Stand on the Natchez Trace. They built it where the Trace crossed a path to the Creek Nation, beside a natural spring, close to where the town square is today. War journals show that Andrew Jackson got supplies there.

In 1850 the Choate family was forced out to Indian Territory under the Indian Removal Act, which Jackson had signed. The town itself was laid out in 1834 under the name Paris, and in 1839 it was renamed for Tadeusz Kosciusko, the Polish officer who helped the Continental Army in the Revolution. In 2017 the city began holding a yearly Return to Redbud Springs Festival, recalling the spring and the family who first settled beside it.

“Kosciusko is a thriving town, possessed of an industrious and energetic population, chiefly engaged in mercantile pursuits.”
Attala County history
  • A bid for the universityBecause the town sat near the center of the state and was thought unusually healthy, it was one of seven places competing in 1841 to host the State University. On the first ballot Kosciusko drew 12 votes, then 16 on the second and 18 on the third, but the university was placed elsewhere.
  • 25,000 bales a yearOnce the Aberdeen division of the Illinois Central reached town, Kosciusko became the trading center for a wide farming district that took in much of Attala, Leake and Neshoba counties. Its merchants shipped about 25,000 bales of cotton each year.
  • A college opened in 1893Local Baptist associations founded Central Mississippi College in Kosciusko in 1893. It was a private school for African American students in a segregated state. Much later, from 1976 to 2008, the city was home to Magnolia Bible College.
  • Where Meredith and Oprah beganJames Meredith was born in Kosciusko in 1933. In 1962 he became the first African American student at the University of Mississippi, starting its desegregation. Oprah Winfrey was born here in 1954 and lived with her grandmother in town until she was six.
  • A fair for over 100 yearsKosciusko has hosted the Central Mississippi Fair for more than a century. Since 2009 the city has also been part of the Mississippi Blues Trail.
