About Kutztown University, Pennsylvania

Kutztown University is a census-designated place of 3,094 people in Maxatawny Township, Berks County, just outside the borough of Kutztown. It counted 2,918 residents in 2010. After the Civil War, upper Berks County was short of schoolteachers. To train them, the Keystone State Normal School first opened its doors on September 15, 1866, on the ground where Old Main stands today.

As industry grew in the region, schools needed more and better trained teachers, and in 1928 the school became Kutztown State Teachers College, with the right to grant the bachelor's degree. Later, local industries needed liberally educated workers more than they needed teachers. In 1960 the Pennsylvania Department of Education renamed the school Kutztown State College and widened its programs, and on July 1, 1983, it became Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

“Shortly after the close of the Civil War, residents of upper Berks County were able to turn their thoughts from mere survival on the frontier toward building a modern society.”
