About La Casita, Texas
La Casita is a Spanish-speaking community of 139 people in southern Starr County, near the Rio Grande. It sits beside Garciasville along Farm Road 1430, about ten miles east of Rio Grande City, and it was apparently already a township by 1882. Today it is a census-designated place of its own, carved out of the former La Casita-Garciasville CDP before the 2010 census.
- Land from Escandón's grantsIn the mid-eighteenth century, Spain gave land on the north bank of the Rio Grande to the colonists of José de Escandón living at Camargo, Mexico. La Casita stands inside the boundaries of those original grants.
- A one-teacher school in 1899By 1899 La Casita had a public school. One teacher taught all fifty-three of its students.
- A church and two dozen storesOver the years La Casita came to have two dozen stores, along with an Assembly of God church that held its services in Spanish.
