About La Harpe, Illinois
From the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois: "LA HARPE, a city in Hancock County, on the Toledo, Peoria & Western Railway, 70 miles west by south from Peoria and 20 miles south-south east of Burlington, Iowa. Brick, tile and cigars constitute the manufactured output. La Harpe has two banks, five churches, a graded and a high school, a seminary, and two newspapers."
From the Papers of Abraham Lincoln: "Originally known as Franklin, town leaders changed the name when the U.S. Post Office Department refused to give the area a post office because of the large number of Franklins already in Illinois."
