About La Paloma, Texas

La Paloma is a community of 3,218 people in Cameron County, on U.S. Route 281 and less than a mile north of the Rio Grande. Its name is Spanish for "the dove," and it lies 16 miles northwest of Brownsville, close to the Mexican border.

The settlement took shape around the railroad. When the San Benito and Rio Grande Valley Railway reached La Paloma in 1912, it put up a station there, and a post office opened that same year. The post office served the community until it closed in 1957.

  • Named for the dovesManuel Saldona, an early landowner who kept the general store, gave the community its name. He chose it for the doves that lived in the clumps of oak, willow and huisache around the settlement.
  • 150 people by 1940Within three decades of the railroad's arrival, La Paloma had grown into a small farm town. By 1940 it counted 150 residents, a school, two churches and five businesses, along with its post office.
  • In a Johnny Cash songLa Paloma is one of the towns named in Hank Snow's version of the Geoff Mack song "I've Been Everywhere." More than 130 artists later recorded the song, Johnny Cash among them.
