This vintage linen postcard captures the La Plata Motel along U.S. Route 301 in La Plata, Maryland, a roadside stop from the era when the highway carried travelers through the heart of Charles County. La Plata serves as the county seat, and Route 301 has long been one of the principal north–south corridors connecting the Washington, D.C. region to the lower reaches of southern Maryland.
Postcards like this one date to the golden age of American "linen" cards, roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, when their textured stock and saturated colors brought everyday Main Streets and motor courts to life. This image comes from the catalog of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, preserved today in the Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
