About Lake Alfred, Florida
Lake Alfred is a Polk County city shaped by railroads, citrus research, and several changes of name. Established after the South Florida Railroad arrived in 1883, the community was known as Fargo, Chubb, and Bartow Junction before adopting Lake Alfred in 1913. Its institutions include a citrus research center founded in 1917 and a public library begun by volunteers in 1962.
- Four NamesThe settlement passed through the names Fargo, Chubb, and Bartow Junction before becoming Lake Alfred in 1913.
- Water and LandOf the city's 8.6 square miles, 3.7 are water and 4.9 are land.
- Citrus ResearchFlorida established the Citrus Experiment Station here in 1917; it is now the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center.
- Volunteer LibraryThe Junior Women's Club started the public library in 1962 with 1,000 books donated by residents and merchants.
- Rail LineCSX operates the former Atlantic Coast Line main line through the city, and Amtrak trains use it without stopping.
