About Lake Preston, South Dakota
From the Federal Writers Project: "LAKE PRESTON, 56m. (1,722 alt., 1,009 pop.), received its name from the lake nearby, which was discovered and named in 1839 by Gen. John C. Fremont, noted pathfinder, who surveyed the levels of the water on his journey through the Northwest. He named the lake for Senator Preston of North Carolina."
