About Lake Summerset, Illinois

Lake Summerset is a community of 2,342 people on the line between Winnebago and Stephenson counties in northern Illinois. It began in 1968, when Boise Cascade Properties laid out a subdivision of 2,000 lots around a lake it was creating on the south branch of Otter Creek. The dam that formed the lake was built in 1969, and homes soon followed along its shores.

  • All but 500 lots soldGregory J. Tichacek of the Illinois Department of Conservation studied the county's lakes and streams for a 1971 state report. He called Lake Summerset the newest of the county's lake subdivisions and found that buyers had already taken all but 500 of its 2,000 lots, only a few years after work began.
  • Most lake acres in the countyBuilding Lake Summerset in 1969 gave Laona Township a new distinction. By 1971 the township held 298 acres of lakes, more than any other township in Winnebago County, a lead it had gained only recently, when the new lake filled.
  • A lake town in two countiesLake Summerset reaches across the county line into Stephenson County and covers 2.5 square miles, 0.4 of them water. Children on the Winnebago side attend Durand Community Unit School District 322, and those on the Stephenson side attend Dakota Community Unit School District 201.
