About Lakeside-Lester Park, Minnesota

In 1871 Hugh McCulloch bought land here and platted the future neighborhood. He had served as Treasury Secretary under President Lincoln. The area became the Village of Lakeside in 1889. Duluth annexed it on January 1, 1893.

Until 2016 Lakeside was a dry neighborhood. No store or restaurant could sell alcohol there. Residents could still drink at home or at private events. The city council ended the ban in 2016 after a citywide vote.

  • A schoolhouse turned into a homeThe house at 5217 London Road began as the New London School, a four-room schoolhouse built in 1889. In 1900 it was taken apart, moved and rebuilt as a home for Bradford C. Church. He was president of the Imperial Milling Company.
