About Laketon, Michigan

Laketon is a township of 7,626 people in Muskegon County, with lakes on every side but the north and one three-mile lake inside its borders. It was part of Muskegon until March 8, 1865, when it was organized as the 11th of the county's 16 townships. At first it also took in land on the south side of Muskegon Lake and the present City of North Muskegon.

Settlement came late here. When Henry Buys arrived in 1863, there were no roads or bridges and only a few settlers, and the woods were so thick that on cloudy days families lit candles to do their housework. Buys stayed and cleared the land, and he came to own about 500 acres of farm and fruit land around section 11.

  • First steam ferry, 1862George L. Christy left home at 16 to sail the Great Lakes. He built the Greyhound, a vessel known as one of the fastest on the lakes, and sailed it to Chicago in 1860-1. In 1862 he ran a ferry across Muskegon Lake and built its first steam ferry boat, then sold out at the end of the season. He settled on section 4 of Laketon in 1864.
  • Fruit farms from forestIsaac F. Black came from Ontario in the spring of 1865 and settled in Laketon that same year. When he started work on his land in section 3, not one tree had been cut. He cleared it into a fine fruit farm and served as a justice of the peace, while neighbors like Riley Clemens and Napoleon Wilson also built up large fruit farms.
  • A mill on Bear LakeThe Ruddiman family were among the first to settle here, where Bear Lake empties out, beside the spot that held the old flour mill. Nearby, Moulton planted a great vineyard on the peninsula. J. Ruddiman served as township supervisor in 1868, following S. A. Brown, who held the office for the township's first three years.
  • Twenty thousand pinesLocal Boy Scouts and members of the Izaak Walton League helped replant Muskegon State Park, setting out more than twenty thousand pine seedlings there.
