About Lakeview, Georgia
Lakeview is a community of 4,777 people, counted in the 2020 census, that straddles Catoosa and Walker counties a few miles east of Rossville. It got its start in 1925 as a planned community laid out beside Lake Winnepesaukah, and the town's name describes that connection to the water.
- Green's Lake renamedThe lake at the heart of Lakeview was first known as Green's Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Carl O. Dixon bought it and replaced the old name with an Indian one, which people say means Beautiful Lake of the Highlands. The name is sometimes spelled Winnepesaukat.
- Home of Lake WinnieThe Lake Winnie amusement park, which takes its nickname from Lake Winnepesaukah, sits inside Lakeview's boundaries today. The park and the community share the lake that gave both of them their names.
- A planned town from 1925Lakeview was laid out on purpose in 1925 rather than growing up around a crossroads. It has never incorporated as a city, but it has held steady in size, with 4,820 people in 2000 and 4,777 in 2020.
