About Lancaster, South Carolina
Lancaster is a city of 8,460 people and the county seat of Lancaster County, in the Charlotte metropolitan area. In 1896 Leroy Springs opened the Lancaster Cotton Mill here, and the jobs it brought eased some of the poverty on the farms around town. It was only the start, because many more cotton factories followed it into the area.
- Named for the House of LancasterThe city took its name from the House of Lancaster, the same name carried by the county that surrounds it.
- Courthouse and jail, 1971As the county seat, Lancaster is home to the Lancaster County Courthouse and the Lancaster County Jail. Both buildings joined the National Register in 1971.
- The mill builder's houseLeroy Springs opened the Lancaster Cotton Mill in 1896, the first of the cotton factories that changed the area. His house in town, the Leroy Springs House, joined the National Register in 1986.
