About Landing, New Jersey
Landing is a community of 4,296 people in Roxbury Township, Morris County, at the south end of Lake Hopatcong. Here the Musconetcong River leaves the lake, and in 1824 crews broke ground at that outlet for the Morris Canal, which was finished in 1832.
Later the lake drew summer crowds. From the 1880s through the 1940s, thousands of visitors came to Landing's shoreline every year. After World War II the resort trade faded, and Landing slowly grew into a large suburban neighborhood.
- A lock to feed the canalMorris Canal work began in 1824 at the lake's outlet, then called Brooklyn, as planner George B. McCulloch looked on with state officials and engineers. Crews raised the banks eight feet and built a lock to control water flowing to the canal's summit level. Boats hauling Jefferson Township mine ore and wood from the edge of Sussex County passed through, and the canal was finished in 1832. Part of the Morris Canal Historic District is in Landing.
- Dynamite on the lakeshoreStarting in the 1880s, a plant of the American Forcite Powder Manufacturing Company stood on Landing's shore, where Shore Hills is today. It made forcite, a kind of gelatin dynamite. The inventor Hudson Maxim first came to Lake Hopatcong through that company. In 1901 he bought a big tract on the western shore, and around then DuPont, which by then owned powder works there, built him a laboratory at Landing.
- A stone station from 1911Landing's Lake Hopatcong station was built by the Lackawanna Railroad from native stone. From 1911 into the 1950s it was the gateway to the lake for resort guests and residents alike. Lackawanna trains, Morris Canal boats, steamboats on the lake and trolleys of the Morris County Traction Company all met at this one spot.
