From the North Carolina Gazetteer: "Lawndale town in central Cleveland County on First Broad River. Alt. 843. Settled 1870; inc. 1903. Named for spreading green lawns of Maj. H. F. Schenck, owner of local mills, est. in 1888, and local power company."
