About Leakesville, Mississippi

Leakesville is a town of 3,775 people and the county seat of Greene County, in the Piney Woods of southeastern Mississippi. It stands on the west bank of the Chickasawhay River, which flows south to join the Pascagoula River on its way to the Gulf of Mexico. The town is named for Walter Leake, who was Mississippi's third governor and held office from 1822 to 1825. The Mississippi Encyclopedia gives 1906 as the year Leakesville was founded.

  • Choctaw country before 1830Like most of Mississippi, this ground was once the homeland of the Choctaw. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced them to cede it to the United States, and they were the first of the Five Civilized Tribes of the Southeast sent west to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Some Choctaw stayed in the state. Their descendants form the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, a tribe the federal government recognizes today.
  • A post office since 1829Settlers of European descent started a settlement here in 1829, and a post office called Leakesville opened that same year. It has stayed open ever since. Through the nineteenth century the land around the town was turned into cotton plantations, and the area is still mostly rural.
  • Annexed in 2018The South Mississippi Correctional Institution, a state prison run by the Mississippi Department of Corrections, stands at Leakesville. A judge signed off on an agreement in 2018 that allowed the town to annex several nearby areas, including the prison grounds.
