About Leesville, Louisiana
Leesville is a city of 5,649 people and the parish seat of Vernon Parish. When the state created Vernon Parish in 1871, the same act made Leesville its capital and ordered that the seat stand on or near Bayou Castor. The town grew up on that spot, and its incorporation came later, after the streets and lots had already been surveyed.
Leesville lies a little north and west of the middle of the parish, in the western longleaf yellow pine country. After a railroad was built through the parish, the town became an important place for business. Several large sawmills and woodworking plants set up there, so lumber became its main industry.
- 2,500 carloads of lumberAn early history of the parish reported that Leesville shipped out 2,500 carloads of lumber and 2,000 bales of cotton every year. Farms spread onto the land where the timber had been cut, and their dairy and farm goods were sold in town or shipped away. At that time Leesville had 2,093 people and was growing fast.
- Waterworks and an ice plantThe same history described a well-equipped town. Leesville had waterworks with 6 miles of mains and good fire protection, along with an electric light plant, a telephone exchange and an ice plant that made 15 tons a day. It also had foundries, bottling works, 2 banks, 2 newspapers, hotels and several churches.
- Home of Fort PolkLeesville is home to Fort Polk, a U.S. Army installation. The post was called Fort Johnson from 2023 to 2025 before it took back the Fort Polk name.
