About Lenoir, North Carolina

Lenoir is a city of 18,352 people and the seat of Caldwell County, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Around 1765 the Tucker family settled on the north bank of Lower Creek. Their place, called Tucker's Barn, grew into a small community with a tavern and a blacksmith shop. It also served as a voting place, a muster ground, a store and a spot for celebrations.

Caldwell County was formed in 1841, and a commission had to pick a site for its county seat. One member wanted the south side of Lower Creek, where the Whitnel area is today, for its view of the mountains. Most of the county's people lived north of the creek, though, so the commission chose Tucker's Barn. The town was laid out that year and incorporated in 1851. It took its name from William Lenoir, a general in the Revolutionary War who lived from 1751 to 1839 and had made his home north of the site.

  • Stoneman's raid in 1865During his final raid of the Civil War, Gen. Stoneman rode through Lenoir twice, on March 28 and again on April 15, and a small skirmish was fought near town on March 29. Local men served in Confederate companies, while Unionists in the county were joined by deserters as the war went on. After the war Clinton A. Cilley, a Union Medal of Honor recipient, settled here and became a lawyer, a judge and mayor of Lenoir.
  • A furniture townFurniture has long been one of Lenoir's biggest employers. Broyhill Furniture, one of the largest furniture makers in the country, had its headquarters here until it closed, and Bernhardt, Kincaid and Fairfield all make their home in or near the city. In the 1990s several factories shut down as the companies changed with buyers' tastes, and today medicine and education employ the most people. Google built a data center here after the city, county and state offered incentives in 2007.
  • A Donald Ross golf courseThe Lenoir Golf Club opened with nine holes in 1928. Donald Ross redesigned the course in 1945, and it grew to 18 holes in 1961.
