About Lewisboro, New York

Lewisboro is a town of 12,265 people in Westchester County, along the Connecticut line. Its first settlers bought land from the Native people who lived here and built their homes around South Salem. The town was formed under the name Salem in 1747, and by 1790 it had shrunk to its present size as land was carved off for other towns.

In 1806 the town was renamed South Salem. Later John Lewis, a financier and early settler, asked that the town take his name, and he set up a fund for it. He had also promised to bring a railroad link to the town and never delivered it, but the town kept his name as Lewisboro.

  • The hermit of West MountainSarah Bishop is said to have been mistreated by British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Afterward she withdrew from the world and lived alone in the hills of Lewisboro, where people called her the hermit of West Mountain. The spot known as Sarah Bishop's Cave sits on the hill north of Lake Rippowam, near Mountain Lakes Camp.
  • The Leatherman's Loop since 1987Around the time of the Civil War, a wanderer called the Leatherman, named for the leather clothes he made himself, walked a regular route past homes that would give him a meal. He came back to the same doorsteps for 25 years. Hikers in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation still visit a cave he often slept in, and since 1987 a 10k trail race there each spring has carried his name.
  • A chevron-shaped townLewisboro's odd chevron outline comes partly from The Oblong, a strip of land that took shape when Connecticut and New York settled their long fight over the border. Today Ridgefield and Wilton, Connecticut, lie along its east side, and New Canaan, Connecticut, lies to the south.
  • The Three LakesLake Waccabuc, Lake Oscaleta and Lake Rippowam are natural lakes joined to one another, and together they are called the Three Lakes. Waccabuc is the biggest, and the part of town named for it has a post office of its own. Oscaleta and Rippowam also go by the Twin Lakes, most likely after Twin Lakes Village, which runs between them.
