About Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

Lexington-Fayette is a city of 322,570 people that fills all of Fayette County, and it is the county seat. In June 1775, 17 years before Kentucky became a state, William McConnell and a party of frontiersmen camped by a branch of Elkhorn Creek, at what is now McConnell Springs. News reached them of the fighting at Lexington, Massachusetts, on April 19. They named their camp Lexington, the first of many places in America named for the Massachusetts town.

On January 25, 1780, 45 settlers signed the Lexington Compact. Each share got a half-acre lot inside the walls of Fort Lexington and a 5-acre lot outside for farming. In December 1781 about 600 pioneers from Spotsylvania County, Virginia, arrived under the preacher Lewis Craig and Captain William Ellis. They were known as the Travelling Church. The Virginia General Assembly chartered the town on May 6, 1782. In the early 1800s John Wesley Hunt, a planter here, grew so rich that he is counted as the first millionaire anywhere west of the Alleghenies.

“Lexington is the largest and most wealthy town in Kentucky, or indeed west of the Allegheny Mountains; the main street of Lexington has all the appearance of Market Street in Philadelphia on a busy day”
Wikipedia
  • Kentucky's oldest Black Baptist churchAround 1790 Peter Durrett founded First African Baptist Church. He was an enslaved Baptist preacher held by Joseph Craig, and he had helped guide the Travelling Church to Kentucky. By 1850 the church was led by London Ferrill, a free Black man from Virginia. With 1,820 members, it was the largest church in the state, Black or white. It is the third-oldest Black Baptist congregation in the country.
  • The cholera of 1833Cholera spread along the Mississippi and Ohio valleys in 1833. In Lexington it killed 500 of the town's 7,000 people within two months, including nearly a third of the members of Christ Church Episcopal. London Ferrill, the second preacher at First African Baptist, stayed to care for the sick.
  • Henry Clay's War of 1812Henry Clay, a Lexington lawyer, was Speaker of the U.S. House in 1812 and helped lead the War Hawks, who pushed for war with Britain. Lexington sent six companies of volunteers, and James Erwin's rope-walk, on his Richmond Road farm, was their recruiting office and barracks until the war ended. Clay later helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. His law office is on the National Register.
  • The nation's first growth boundaryLexington's nickname, the Horse Capital of the World, comes from its hundreds of horse farms, plus Keeneland, The Red Mile and the Kentucky Horse Park. To protect those farms, the city drew the nation's first urban growth boundary in 1958. New building had to stay inside an urban service area, and land outside it had to be held in tracts of at least 40 acres.
