About Libby, Montana

Libby is a city of 2,775 people and the seat of Lincoln County, where Libby Creek meets the Kootenai River between the Cabinet and Purcell mountains. Prospectors found gold on Libby Creek in 1862, and the creek, and later the town, took the name of one prospector's daughter. Miners rushed to the creek in 1867, but the camp was deserted by the 1870s.

The town got a second start when the Great Northern Railway arrived in 1892. The settlement moved downstream to meet the tracks, and its name was shortened from Libbysville to Libby. Logging and mining then carried the local economy for decades, and Amtrak trains still stop at Libby's station on the BNSF line.

“Libby's sawmill, second largest (1938) in Montana, saws between 60 and 80 million board feet of lumber annually.”
Montana: A State Guide Book, 1939
  • Vermiculite from 1919Vermiculite was found in the mountains near Libby in 1919, and W. R. Grace and Company bought the mine in 1963, when it produced 80% of the world's supply. The ore carried asbestos, and mine leftovers had gone into local buildings and yards, so many residents developed asbestosis. In 2009 the EPA made Libby its first public health emergency. The agency spent $425 million on cleanup and finished in town in 2018, leaving only the old mine site.
  • A library begun in 1920The Libby Woman's Club had kept a small library of two thousand books. When residents asked the county commissioners for a county free library in 1920, club members voted to give it their collection, and the new library opened in the old Woman's Club building. It moved several times before the Inez R. Herrig building went up in 1964, and a bookmobile reached smaller places from 1956 to 1974.
  • A ski hill run by volunteersIn 1961 volunteers started the Turner Ski Area, roughly 20 miles north of Libby. It belongs to a nonprofit foundation and still relies on donations and volunteer hours to operate. In 2017/2018 it served around 4,600 visits.
  • Kootenai Falls on filmThe Kootenai Falls are sacred to the Kutenai tribes who first lived here. The falls and the Swinging Bridge, which Civilian Conservation Corps crews first built in the Great Depression, appeared in The River Wild in 1994, and the falls returned to the screen in The Revenant in 2015.
