About the Town of Liberty, New York

Liberty was carved from the large town of Lumberland, and at first it also held today's Callicoon and Fremont. Its first settlers came from Connecticut and built homes near Revonah Lake, then called Broadhead Pond. Once they cleared the dark hemlock forest, tanneries grew into an early industry that lasted through the Civil War era.

The hamlet of Ferndale began as Liberty Falls, settled by Roswell Russell in 1807. The NYO&W Railway renamed it Ferndale because the mail kept getting mixed up. Ferndale later became known as home of the Grossinger Resort Hotel.

  • Winter resort pastIn 1940 the state guide called Liberty a year-round resort. It offered toboggan slides, ski trails, winter carnivals and races. The village also had a large private tuberculosis sanatorium.
