About Licking, Missouri

Licking is a city of 2,851 people in Texas County, in the Ozarks of southern Missouri, where U.S. Route 63 crosses Missouri Route 32. Joel Sherrill, William Thornton and Cartes Baldridge were settling the surrounding country as early as 1826, and the town itself was incorporated in 1878.

Licking grew quickly once the South Central Correctional Center began operating in June 2000. Between the 2000 and 2010 censuses the city's population doubled, and today no other city in Texas County has more people.

  • Named for a mineral lickThe town's name comes from a mineral lick that sat close to the first town site. In its early days the place also went by another name, Buffalo Lick.
  • Amish neighbors since 2009In 2009 a small Amish community began moving to Licking from Berne, Indiana, and more families followed in the years after.
  • An Oscar winner's last homeMiyoshi Umeki, the Japanese-born actress who won an Oscar, spent her final years in Licking, living with her only child and his family. She died here in 2007.
