About Lindsay, Nebraska

Lindsay is a village of 283 people in Platte County, Nebraska. Families began homesteading the fertile land near Shell Creek in 1862 under the Homestead Act. The town was laid out on November 8, 1886, and its first settler, John Walker, named it for Lindsay, Ontario, the Canadian town many of the early settlers had come from. Lindsay became an incorporated village on March 7, 1888.

The Chicago and North Western Railroad's Albion Line ran through the village, carrying four freight trains and two passenger trains each day. Early in the twentieth century Lindsay had its own electric utility and a water system fed by a 100-foot well and a 60,000-gallon tank, and by 1917 close to 500 people lived here.

“During the 1950s and 1960s Paul Zimmerer, working in his auto and farm equipment repair shop in Lindsay, Nebraska, invented a series of irrigation products that changed the landscape of Nebraska agriculture.”

  • Lindsay Manufacturing, 1955Paul Zimmerer ran a repair shop for cars and farm machines in Lindsay, and in 1955 he started the Lindsay Manufacturing Company to build irrigation and farm automation equipment. The business grew into the Lindsay Corporation. Its headquarters is now in Omaha and its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange, but the company still runs a factory in Lindsay.
  • The ZimmaticZimmerer's Zimmatic irrigation system used an external collector ring to carry electric power through the whole system. Inventions like that one, along with a factory built on Zimmerer's farm just east of town, turned Lindsay into a leading supplier of irrigation equipment across the U.S. and around the world.
  • 460 of 577 jobsIn 2005 the company employed about 460 people in Lindsay. That was 80% of the 577 jobs in the whole village.
